Marine General Liability

Marine General Liability

Home / Marine Insurance / Marine General Liability

When a person is injured or property is damaged while engaging in marine-related operations, a standard commercial general liability policy will not do.  Marine General Liability Policies (MGL) are designed to cover the specific exposures that you find only in the marine industry. The type of package you require can and often does depend on what you do and how you do it. The following is a brief list with descriptions of some of the most common legal liability options that cover additional exposures.

Ship Repairer’s

All ship repairers are required to carry Ship Repairer’s Legal Liability (SRLL) which protects them in the event that the vessel is damaged while in their care, custody, or control. With the values of vessels on the rise annually, it is imperative that you speak with an experienced marine insurance agent to assess the risk and determine if the coverage purchased is adequate.

Contractors – Dock, Seawall & Pile Driving

Building docks and seawalls requires a skill set found in only the most seasoned of contractors. The use of cranes and barges is commonplace, which only adds to the level of sophistication. It is important to endorse the MGL and inland marine policies for this exposure, and failure to do so may have drastic consequences. Furthermore, injuries to your employees may be subject to either Jones Act or the Longshore Harbor Workers Compensation Act depending on their activities.

Terminal Operators

When cargo is handled for import or export, damage is an everyday occurrence. Boxes, crates, and packages are dropped on a regular basis and their contents are sometimes destroyed. Dockworkers and stevedores are rarely held accountable for these accidents. The terminal operator is the individual who must provide liability coverage that protects against damage to cargo during loading and unloading.
